‘Authentic’ and ‘timeless’ are two words that convey a lot of importance in the world of Americana country music.
Being true to the values and aesthetics of one’s forebears in the rich lineage of the genre is a cherished trait, as important as possessing good songs and the players exhibiting a strong chemistry.
Now we welcome a duo from the sleepy Californian hamlet of Eagle Rock (no, not that Eagle Rock) who possess all of the above attributes in spades. The Milk Carton Kids – singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan – peddle a brand of music as ‘authentic’ and ‘timeless’ as you could ever hope to hear, their voices and trademark vintage guitars meshing into one glorious single entity that seems to emit from a bygone era, as if they’d ploughed dustbowls with Guthrie and jumped trains with Kerouac to gather insight for their beautiful narratives. Their music is clearly of American heritage but equally hard to pin down, not seeming to be rooted in the fields of the north, the swamps of the Deep South, the deserts of Texas nor the mountains of Appalachia, yet somehow encompassing the distinctive virtues of each of these locales.
Despite being a relatively new venture – they only formed The Milk Carton Kids in 2011 – the pair have already released two acclaimed albums (2011’s Prologue and their brand new effort The Ash & Clay) and shared stages with acts such as Old Crow Medicine Show and K.D. Lang, as well as undertaking literally hundreds of their own headlining shows. Legendary director Gus Van Zandt chose three of their songs for his feature film Promised Land, trading heavily on their aura of nostalgia plus the rural values which liberally permeate their muse.
Now Australian audiences are going to experience the myriad pleasures of The Milk Carton Kids firsthand when the pair head southwards for their inaugural Australian visit this June, bringing a touch of both history and the future to appropriately ornate venues up and down the east coast.
