JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE (SOLO) 2013

THE RETURN OF THE REAL DEAL
JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE, FEBRUARY 2013

Sometimes you don’t need a reason to do something, desire itself being enough justification. Such is the impetus for Justin Townes Earle returning to Australia to play another run of shows – he just wants to be down here, spending time in the country where he feels a special affinity with both the people and the land. Even customs have lost track about how many times the lanky country singer-songwriter from Nashville has been to Australia since his first foray in 2008 (although we believe this to be his sixth visit), he’s basically one of us now. He’d like that, we reckon.

Last here in April for Bluesfest and a national run of headline shows in support of his presciently-titled fourth album Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now, we aren’t really sure what he’s been up to since then, but no news is good news. Probably writing a swag of awesome new tunes, as is his wont. Or travelling the States impressing all and sundry with his modern-day take on the authentic country music of yore, which was schooled into him from a young age by his legendary old man, Steve Earle. We’ve heard whispers of him curating celebrations for Woody Guthrie’s centennial celebrations in New York, which sounds like something that he’d do. But he certainly made his debut at producing when he tool the helm of the legendary Wanda Jackson’s new album Unfinished Business. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter what he’s been up to, only that he’s returning, and he’s bringing his guitar and incredible knack for writing odes for the downtrodden and broken-hearted, something of a speciality for the young man.

And joining him on this trip for his first foray Down Under will be burgeoning Houston singer-songwriter Robert Ellis who earned widespread acclaim for his debut album Photographs (New West), (which will be re-released early 2013 with bonus material) and whose sparse yet poignant wordplay and deft guitar skills will make him the perfect appetiser for the Justin Townes Earle main course.

So whether you’ve been seeing him continually over the last few years or just recently opened your heart and mind to the music of Justin Townes Earle, rejoice at news of his imminent return, and rest safe in the knowledge that he’s as excited to be coming back to see you as you are to be spending more time in his esteemed and always enjoyable company.
