IAN BALL (FROM GOMEZ) 2013
No stranger to Australian audiences, having toured many times as guitarist/singer for acclaimed British rock band Gomez, Ian Ball and Love Police announce an extensive national solo tour to celebrate the release of his second album, Unfold Yourself.
In Gomez, Ian penned some of their most beloved tunes, including ‘Whippin’ Piccadilly,’ ‘Get Myself Arrested,’ ‘In Our Gun’ and ‘Notice.’ After a year of touring with the band came to a close, he bunkered down in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles to work on the new solo offering, the follow up to his 11-track opus, Who Goes There. On first single ‘Open Sesame’, Ball delivers a more synth heavy pop sound than his previous work, whilst still brim with his trademark boyish vocals and charming melodies.
Ian’s message to Australia
“Who’s there?”
“Nay, answer me; stand, and unfold yourself.”
The sequel to Who Goes There, my first album outside of Gomez, was always going to be called Unfold Yourself. It was only as I got into recording it that I realized how fitting the title would become…
Although I set out to record a mainly instrumental, electronic record, I couldn’t stop myself from playing acoustic guitar and writing songs over the top. What was originally supposed to be long and sprawling, became concise and accurate. What was meant to be zone out music became some of my most infectious and melodic blast at full volume while driving badly music.
So the lyrics naturally headed towards the big, bad questions of how to escape our seemingly inescapable selves. Can we control ourselves and our natural instincts? Can we change our identity or are we at the mercy of our genes? Both my mum (Phantom Of The Opera and Bon Jovi fanatic) and my son (Katy Perry and Donna Summer crazy) love the album, so presumably I must lie somewhere in the vast musical space between. So I set out to explore these musings, whilst trying to make the most euphoric music possible….
I’m thrilled to be bringing the album to Australia first. My most memorable musical evenings have occurred there, and I expect there are more to come…
