DAWES 2015
LA group Dawes return to Australia off the back of their newest single (and album title track) “All Your Favourite Bands”.
“Your favorite band can identify you, express how you see yourself,” explains frontman Taylor Goldsmith, who co-wrote the song with Jonny Fritz and is the sole author of the album’s other eight tracks. “They enable you to articulate your feelings through the way they play their instruments and the lyrics.”
Produced by David Rawlings (Dave Rawlings Machine, Gillian Welch, Robyn Hitchcock, Old Crow Medicine Show, Willie Watson) at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Dawes recorded these new songs after they had already been road-tested in front of live audiences in intimate venues from Sonoma to Santa Barbara, with Rawlings in tow. The producer even played guitar solos on two of the tracks.
The video for the album title track features a stellar cast of peers doing their rendition of the single including Cory Chisel, Brandon Flowers, John McCauley, Blake Mills, John Moreland, My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst, Molly Jensen, Phases, Dave Rawlings, Johnathan Rice, Shovels & Rope, Paul Spring, Matthew Logan Vasquez and Gillian Welch. Supporting Dawes will be Missouri raised, Oregon based Americana artist Barna Howard (also appearing at Out on the Weekend).
Barna Howard’s self-titled debut album was critically acclaimed and considered an “underground success”, partly thanks to his song “Turns Around The Bottle” being placed in the indie film “Drinking Buddies” starring Olivia Wilde & Anna Kendrick.
The songs on Barna’s latest album, “Quite A Feelin’”, ruminate on his relationship with home. Now entrenched in Portland, Oregon, many of the album’s tracks immortalize and reflect on the Eureka Missouri he once knew, while others focus on the relationships that define his new home out west. Small town life has long been celebrated in country and folk music, but Barna’s knack for capturing his own deeply personal nostalgia resonates in a rarely universal way.
Opening will be Melbourne’s Tracy McNeil, an artist caught between two continents – her Canadian homeland and her now permanent Australian residency.
Her 2014 album “Nobody Ever Leaves” is a fresh sound that infuses North American roots with the heart and grit of Melbourne’s thriving alt.country scene. Add to this the pop-soaked splendour of 1970’s West-Coast California, and you’ll be coasting the musical landscape that is Tracy McNeil.
