Sun Kil Moon will be playing a 2.5 hour set at all shows.

Today Sun Kil Moon announces a special Australian tour, along the beautiful East Coast at venues worthy of such grandeur: The City Recital Hall in Sydney, the Atheneum Theatre in Melbourne, and the Hi-Fi in Brisbane. Take a seat and strap in for over two hours of Sun Kil Moon majesty. Listen for the pin drops, the weeping fans and the happy sadness swelling in the rooms.

Sun Kil Moon has had an eventful 2014, releasing his acclaimed sixth full length record Benji. The album features guest musicians Steve Shelley, Will Oldham and Owen Ashworth. Benji is considered by critics and fans alike as his finest piece of work, and received incredible reviews upon release. Pitchfork gave it a whopping 9.2.and called it “astonishing”. Not surprisingly, Benji has made all the end of year best of lists, including Uncut, Rough Trade, MOJO and Paste. Locally it finished high on the Double J, Faster Louder, and The Music Album Of The Year lists. Zan Rowe from triple j voted it her number one record of the year, saying, “The phrase ‘through great suffering, comes great art’ is tailor-made for Mark Kozelek. Seriously, the guy has experienced a world of pain in his lifetime and this latest opus Benji is entirely autobiographical and bloody depressing. But within that sadness lives incredible, jaw-dropping storytelling. Benji stops me in my tracks. It reminds me of the power of good songwriting. And makes me glad I’m not Mark Kozelek. It’s my number one album of 2014.”

Current laudits aside Mark Kozelek has an incredible back catalogue of music, which started in 1989 as the leader of Red House Painters and continues to this very day. He just released a Christmas album under the moniker Mark Kozelek (Mark Kozelek sings Christmas Carols). Some of his standout records in the 90s with Red House Painters include 1993’s Red House Painters 1 and 1995’s Ocean Beach. In the 2000s his most famous work include 2001’s Old Ramon with the Red House Painters, 2003’s Sun Kil Moon debut Ghosts Of The Great Highway and 2008’s April.

He has a strong affinity with Australia, touring here first in 2004 (with Bonnie Prince Billy) as part of Spunk Record’s 5th Anniversary and then three subsequent national tours for his later 2000 releases. He wrote a track called ‘Australian Winter’ for his 2010 release Admiral Fell Promises. Previously to Benji, Mark Kozelek released an 18 track album under his Sun Kil Moon moniker, entitled Among The Leaves (2012). He toured solo in support of the album and made his debit TV appearance on Fallon performing with The Roots.

Apart from a successful music career, Mark has worked closely with the movie business either as an actor or musician. Ghosts of the Great Highway tracks ‘Carry Me Ohio’ and ‘Lily and Parrots’ were featured in the Steve Martin film Shopgirl, in which Mark plays the role of a lead singer in a fictitious rock band. A live version of ‘Have You Forgotten’ also appears on the soundtrack to the HBO documentary film The Trials of Darryl Hunt. Other highlights include appearing as an actor in Cameron Crowe’s critically acclaimed films Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky.
